Kids Voting North Carolina PO box 29138, Greensboro, NC 27429FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Kids Voting Active In Local Elections Across the State Greensboro, NC (October 29, 2009)...Kids Voting, a national civic education program with twenty-five county programs in NC is keeping students engaged in the political process this election season. With fourteen Kids Voting programs holding municipal elections and other counties offering educational experiences for students this Fall, Kids Voting is teaching students the importance of all elections. From voter guides generated by high school students to candidate forums hosted by student advisory groups to countywide art contests, Kids Voting programs across North Carolina are getting students involved in local elections. This Fall, five Kids Voting programs held candidate forums led by students. Two programs held podcasting/artistic contests that focused on civic themes. The Kids Voting Durham program produced voter guides with candidates' answers to questions from students and Kids Voting Mecklenburg taped their two candidate forums for teachers and students to view in the classroom. In addition to these activities, students will be voting on November 3, Election Day. "This is a win-win situation for everyone," said Daintry O'Brien, Kids Voting North Carolina Executive Director. "The kids get to interact with candidates to ask them about issues that are important to them and candidates get an opportunity to talk with the next generation about politics and why it is important to participate in the political process. So many of our programs are doing phenomenal work presenting fun, hands-on learning opportunities for students. Our programs are working to build on the increased interest in government and politics from kids and include more students in civic activities in their community." Kids Voting North Carolina is a non-partisan nonprofit organization affiliated with Kids Voting USA, a national civic education program for students in grades K-12. Kids Voting North Carolina promotes voter participation by educating America's youth about the importance of being an informed citizen and the responsibilities of voting to sustain democracy.
